Mercy Triumphs Over Judgement

So, I’ve been studying the great book of Jonah these last couple of weeks. Can I just say this, Our God is just crazy amazing!

I think everyone including me has heard of this story as a child at their church’s Sunday school or someone had referred to it some way or the other. And like you I was fascinated by it!

Personally, I don’t think I’ve ever studied this book as deeper nor understood it better until now.
It amazes me how Jonah can experience the fullness of God’s Mercy himself even when his mission was to send the message of Grace to the Ninevites!

Jonah is quite a Character! And so relatable…
He reminds me of me really!
Let’s go on this great journey with Jonah, shall we?

I COMMITTED A CRIME

I committed a crime that ultimately brings about death!
I was locked up to be sentenced.
A terrible crime never to see the light again,
imprisoned with no way of escape.

But God,

oh if not for the cross.

My records wiped clean,
removed all traces.
When I see the
cross I see Freedom.
My Freedom bought with the precious blood of the Lamb.
Grace has found me in my imprisonment,
and gave me Hope.
Jesus I am found in Your Freedom.

 – THE CROSS by Dami Elegbede

Jesus Christ did the things God wanted Him to do. And because of that, we are made holy through the sacrifice of Christ’s body.

Christ made that sacrifice one time—enough for all time.

Freedom: the humble will find mercy

Freedom happens when we humble ourselves.

When we are humble, we rely on and trust in the saving power of Jesus alone to save us not in our own ability.

Then if my people who are called by my name will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, I will hear from heaven and will forgive their sins and restore their land.

2 Chronicles 7:14

While studying John chapter 8, I realised that this chapter speaks volume about the condition of our hearts. So much wisdom and revelation in one chapter!

These are some interesting points I gathered whilst reading…

  • John 8 1-11 described the scene of Jesus teaching the scribes and the Pharisees. Whilst teaching, a woman caught right in the middle of adultery was brought to Him – not to be saved but to be condemned, openly shamed and killed. The woman is undoubtedly guilty of adultery, and according to the Law of Moses she should be punished by death. Instead Jesus did something unexpected. He sets this woman free. However, the revelation I received from this event is this. Although it was never recorded the type of conversation that had happened beforehand between her and the accusers but what I noticed is that this woman never tried to justify her sin when she got to the presence of Jesus but instead she humbled herself. I hear you say, well she had no choice but to humble herself as she was in a vulnerable situation. Yes, that’s correct! I can think of many vulnerable situations that I clearly needed help that pride stopped me from obtaining! What I believed happened here is this -she encountered something amazing that day, which is greater than anything she has ever known. She met with LOVE in flesh.  She met face to face with LOVE Himself and and all she could do was surrender.  I’m guessing from this woman’s story, this is someone that has been trying to fill a hole in her heart by sleeping with men, searching for a real love but all in the wrong places. So, when she finally met with the LOVE she has been searching for all her life face to face, Jesus, a stranger who showed her what true love and kindness is. She bowed in humility and surrender. This is how her story changed forever.

The love of Jesus humbles us to surrender

  • The other part of the story. People will condemn you and leave you worse off than they found you but Jesus said “I won’t condemn you. Go and sin no more” John 8:11. This is what freedom looks like when we admit to our sins and repent. “And therefore, there is no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus” Romans 8:1

Freedom has no condemnation only Victory!

  • John 8:12-30 Upon all the teachings and actions of Jesus in the previous verses. He continues to implore the Pharisees to believe and turn back from their wicked ways. It was clear they were not ready to let go of what they know or have been taught. They believed in God but not in Jesus. They believed in the law of Moses but not in the saving grace of Jesus. And just like us today, we choose what is convenient to believe in and when it suites us to follow Him. There is no shame in admitting we struggle. Jesus made that clear in the previous verses, He is made perfect in our weakness. Remember, “the Proud will never see God”. Freedom happens when we truly let go. If you want to be free, Let GO!

I can’t, Jesus can, Let Him.

  • John 8: 31-59 Finally, after Jesus had demonstrated and taught them what True Freedom is they preferred to remain as slaves by hiding and “defending and justifying” their sins. Even though they know the Word of God, they fail to comprehend the key message in this chapter which is ‘JESUS IS THE WAY, THE TRUTH AND LIFE’. Similarly, a large number of us”Christians” are like these Pharisees, “the educated people of their day, cautious, law-abiding”. Too often we rely on our own wisdom and ability to be perfect. We believe we know what is right for our lives. Just like the Pharisees, we justify our actions because we think we know “the law” and our interpretation of the law is “right”. We pick ‘n’ choose what to and not to believe. Self-reliant! Proud much? The Pharisees preferred to remain captives bound in the chains of “law” as to admitting that they’ve been wrong all along and be set free. What a pity! Imagine, to stand in the presence of Jesus, the Saviour, the Son God and God Himself in flesh and still be living in bondage? Listen, majority of us Christians are still living in bondage today and yet we claim Jesus is our Saviour?! Jesus can only make His home where He is allowed! It is when we give Him full access to all areas of our lives can we then receive complete freedom. So, if you want to be free stop boxing Jesus out, stop thinking that only you can deliver yourself. That’s pride!

“Is He Lord in every aspect of your life?”

Let us think back to when we’ve tried to do things by our own strength. How we failed woefully and yet we refuse to admit we are struggling. We continue to hide under the illusion of freedom.

Get rid of pride and receive true freedom today!

“You can’t whitewash your sins and get by with it; you find mercy by admitting and leaving them.”

Proverbs ‭28:13‬ ‬‬

‘So if the Son sets you free, you are truly free. ‘

John 8:36

Jesus Rescued Me, “Written words from within…”

Love came down and rescued me
Love came down and set me free
I am Yours
Lord, I’m forever Yours
Mountains high or valley low
I sing out and remind my soul
I am Yours
I am forever Yours

Love Came Down – Kari Jobe

OVERWHELMED?

an understatement!

I just can’t express how GRATEFUL I am to know You LOVE me.

How did I get this GIFT from above?

Words FAIL me

INDESCRIBLEABLE!

“While I was in sin, YOU loved me and never once stopped loving me” (paraphrased) Romans 5:8

You are on MY SIDE.

And it’s by Your DIVINE GRACE and MERCY that I am saved.

…and if not for Your KINDNESS that led me to REPENTANCE where would I be?

A HEART that FORGIVES

In WONDER and ADORATION.

I cried out,

FATHER’s love found me again!

DROWNED in Love.

I was LOST and LONELY for a moment but JESUS, You rescued me.

No one to TURN to but YOU

Truly, I AM Yours!

Just like that You answered my prayers, then I became complacent?

I TRUSTED You then I GAVE UP

I forgot about YOU

One thing I said I’ll NEVER do

Ungrateful Days?

How did I get HERE?

[sigh]

My Jesus RESCUED me!

[Paused and reflected]!

Drawing me NEARER,

You reminded me to WORSHIP YOU in all SEASONS

Learning the unforced rhythms of GRACE

I was LOST when You HONOURED me.

My feet SLIPPED

Like a Prodigal son,

You spoke to my HEART.

How can I STAND while others are falling?

Love came down and RESCUED me AGAIN!

My promises were not ENOUGH

I won’t do it AGAIN Jesus!

My PASSION wasn’t enough to catch this FIRE

but from the ashes You bring RESTORATION.

You bring me LIFE

Unquestionable LOVE

Unstoppable LOVE

Consuming LOVE

Your Love is a FLOOD

Try to stop Your LOVE and You would WAGE a WAR!

My SHAME was UNDONE

My sins FORGIVEN

You DELIGHT in showing MERCY

Mercy triumphs over JUDGEMENT

You said Daughter, FORGET the PAST

TEARING down every WALL

Your Love NEVER ends,

Never GIVES UP

You won’t LET me GO

Jesus SAVED me

CLOSER again.

I HAVE BEEN SET FREE!

RESTORED – SONSHIP – RESTORED

No LONGER a SLAVE to FEAR

The FEAR of FALLING that kept me bound was BROKEN!

Your voice reassured me “Now you know what it feels like to fall”

FEAR DISPELLING.

Going DOWN is the way UP

VICTORY is MINE!

Your PURPOSE REVEALED

JESUS, You RESCUED me so I can TELL of Your LOVE.

 SELAH!

P.S. I Love You

Hello there, I’m happy you are here today. This is a quick reminder for the new week.

1 Peter 4:8b NLT

…for love covers a multitude of sins

“I just want someone to love me”, our deepest yearnings and longings is to be loved no matter what. Even a bad person wants to be loved. Love is what everyone craves for here on earth and even when we get to heaven, we all want to be accepted and loved in spite of our flaws. I believe you want to be loved despite of your imperfections too. A convicted murderer still wants to be loved by their family regardless of what they’ve done. We all yearn and long for LOVE no matter who we are, good or bad.

Sometimes, in this pursuit of love, we end up in places that will only end up hurting and creating a bigger void in our lives but as humans we don’t give up, we dust ourselves off, pick ourselves up and continue to run in pursuit of true love, searching and hoping someone will truly love us in defiance of all our mess.

We do crazy things to be accepted by others, we so want to be loved at all cost so we don’t mind to get into relationships we know so well won’t work. In the process we damage ourselves. We are now left with different problems such as low-self-esteem and trust issues. We are damaged and battered by the people we crave to love us. But wait God says you can come as you are, yes with all your mess, with all your imperfections, with your damaged self. He is calling you to come; He wants you as you are. Although you see yourself as a damaged goods, with all that you’ve done, Jesus says He loves you. He loves your flaws, He loves your damaged heart, and He loves you as you are. He will take you as His bride, He will wash and cleanse you, dress you in righteousness. He will marry you and you will be one with Him.

He won’t be ashamed of you.

So, start a relationship with Him. Love is in love with you. Know that your deepest yearnings and longings can be met only by a renewed fellowship with the One in whose image you were created, God.

P.S. God loves you.
